Review Dialogue     

  Scene: A train in Burma. S1 is a young woman visiting Burma and S2 is young Burmese man. Imagine that they have struck up a conversation while travelling. The young man says:     

S2  Nan-meh beh-lo k’aw-dhǎlèh, K’in-bya?  နာမည် ဘယ်လို ခေါ်သလဲ ခင်ဗျာ။  What’s your name (+ m tag)? 

S1  Lucy-ló k’aw-ba-deh.  Lucy-လို့ ခေါ်ပါတယ်။  My name is Lucy. 

S2  Goofy-là?  Goofy-လား။  Is that Goofy? 

S1  Mǎhouq-pa-bù. Lucy-ba.  မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။ Lucy-ပါ။  No: Lucy. 

S2  Aw. Lucy-là? Twé-yá-da wùn-tha-ba-deh, Lucy.  အော်။ Lucy-လား။ တွေ့ရတာ ဝမ်းသာပါတယ် Lucy။  Oh. It’s Lucy is it? I’m happy to have met you Lucy. 

S1  Cǎmà-lèh wùn-tha-ba-deh, Shin.  ကျမလဲ ဝမ်းသာပါတယ် ရှင်။  And I’m happy too (+ f tag). 

  Ăko-gàw? - nan-meh beh-lo k’aw-dhǎlèh?  အကိုကော၊ နာမည် ဘယ်လို ခေါ်သလဲ။  How about you? What’s your name? 

S2  Cǎnáw nan-meh-gá Sàn Maun-ba.  ကျနော့် နာမည်က စမ်းမောင်ပါ။  My name is San Maung. 

S1  T’aq-pyàw-ba-oùn.  ထပ်ပြောပါအုံး။  Could you say that again? 

S2  Sàn Maun-ba.  စမ်းမောင်ပါ။  San Maung. 

S1  Ko Sàn Maun-là?  ကိုစမ်းမောင်လား။  It’s Ko San Maung is it? 

S2  Houq-pa-deh. Lucy-gá Bǎma sǎgà pyàw-da theiq kaùn-da-bèh.  ဟုတ်ပါတယ်။ ဠုငယ-က ဗမာစကား ပြောတာ သိပ်ကောင်းတာပဲ။  Yes. You speak Burmese very well. 

S1  Theiq mǎpyàw-daq-thè-ba-bù, Shin.  သိပ် မပြောတတ်သေးပါဘူး ရှင်။  I can’t say much yet (+ f tag). 

S2  Ătheq beh-lauq shí-bi-lèh?  အသက် ဘယ်လောက် ရှိပြီလဲ။  How old are you? 

S1  Hnǎs’éh thoùn-hniq shí-bi.  နှစ်ဆယ့် သုံးနှစ် ရှိပြီ။  I’m 23. 

  Ko Sàn Maun-gàw? - ǎtheq beh-lauq shí-bi-lèh?  ကိုစမ်းမောင်ကော၊ အသက် ဘယ်လောက် ရှိပြီလဲ။  How about you? How old are you? 

S2  Cǎnaw-gá ǎtheq thoùn-zeh shí-bi, K’in-bya.  ကျနော်က အသက် ၃၀ ရှိပြီ ခင်ဗျာ။  I’m 30 (+ m tag).
